❥ History: The world Nekane is from was originally split in two a long time ago, separating the mundane from the supernatural for eons before suddenly being smashed back together. While there were no major changes in history, the mundane world began to rely heavily on the supernatural/magical as a way to solve all their problems, and as such there is a lot of apathy within Nekane's world. In addition demons began to invade, possessing people, killing them and all sorts of the usual mayhem. Because of this there were many steps taken by powerful magical families to seal away the more nasty demons.

This is where Nekane comes from. Originally known as "Adriel", Nekane was one of thousands of beings dubbed angels created by the Aegle Family to be sacrificed to seal away a nameless, powerful demon. Unfortunately despite starting with this noble cause, the Family was eventually tempted by the power the demon offered and warped into a cult that worshiped said demon. The angels were created to be the demon's playthings and the Family was to keep creating them to keep their powers.

Adriel was eventually born in a new batch and while they were just like every brainwashed and docile angel before them, Adriel's photographic memory and own talents of observation began to poke enough holes in the brainwashing for them to break free of it. They attempt to escape, only to be recaptured and tortured in an effort to make them submit back to their brainwashing. While Adriel did eventually break under the pressure, their refusal to submit ended with them nearly tearing out their own throat. With that made clear, Adriel was left to bleed out in the snow.

Another demon named Adomaitis stumbled across the dying Adriel and attempted to take their soul. Due to everything that happened prior and their sheer rage at life in general, Adriel forced Adomaitis into fusing with them while the angel choked the demon, eventually killing them both. The being that resulted from this failed fusion was a strange angel/demon hybrid. Still heavily injured, they make their way to a nearby town and manage to get some help.

Eventually someone asks their name. They refuse to use "Adriel" and instead make up one: Nekane Adomaitis. It takes them a long time to physically recover from their injuries but eventually they take up a job as a detective, inspired to do so by the person who helped them. Now they take cases involving both mundane and supernatural matters while trying to find enough information on the Aegle Family in the hopes of bringing the cult's true nature to light. And ignoring their own mental issues because Nekane is a champ at dealing with their personal problems.

❥ CRAU?: Like all of the people who ended up in the wonderful world of Penance (aka, Hell), Nekane was sent there because they apparently died but were being given a second chance at redemption rather then burning in a lava lake for all of eternity. Given a list of sins to work off, Nekane was set loose in a hotel run by Lucifer himself, met other sinners and tried to survive and work off said list through character development and good old-fashion torture.

+ Although still prone to some self-destructive behaviors and impulsive decisions, Nekane has been learning better methods of coping with their mental health rather then just ignoring their problems. In addition they have gotten better about being touched by others - although they'll still snap at people if someone gets grabby - and their sleeping schedule is less of a nightmare.

+ Nekane's most positive CR in Penance was Héctor Rivera and he helped them greatly with the above problems. While their first few meetings were rocky due to Nekane's prickly nature they soon grew close, bonding over the terror of Hell and a similar terrible sense of humor. Héctor is someone that Nekane deeply loves and treasures, although they still get embarrassed saying the former. Ultimately they'll go to any length to keep him safe, even to their own determent, which has caused problems in the past.

+ Between Héctor and certain events in Penance, Nekane slowly started to come to terms with their past and who they used to be. While Nekane has not completely forgiven themself, they have acknowledged that they laid far too much blame at the feet of their past self for things well out of their control and was slowly learning how to let go of their self-hatred. It is still very much a work-in-progress however, and Nekane can slip when upset or angry as their first instinct is to turn that on themself.

- As of their canon update in Penance, Nekane began to have difficulty telling dreams from reality. While they do have a good grasp on reality for the most part Nekane can still zone out and, at their worst, disassociate. In addition, due to an event in Penance called the Stepford Experiment, Nekane is heavily distrusting of when things are "cheery and everything is fine" - they'll probably spend their first month or so in Hugtopia waiting for the other shoe to drop. For how much their paranoia has gotten better, it has gotten worse in some respects.

- On the flip side of Héctor, Nekane's worst CR was with a man named Dodger. Their first meeting was a disaster due to Nekane finding out that Dodger murdered Héctor and took revenge by killing Dodger in return, and things remained shaky from then on. While Nekane would admit there were good times on the odd occasion, it ultimately ended when - at the behest of a cult in Hell - Dodger tortured and assaulted Nekane on the off-chance he could help Héctor get home. This event nearly set back Nekane's progress with touch and while they were able to see why he did what he did....they're not exactly sorry that they'd be leaving Dodger in Hell.

❥ Personality: Ages ago, Nekane was happy. Loyal and devoted to their role as one of many sacrifices to seal away a powerful demon, as Adriel they never questioned this. Subservient, docile and willing to please, Adriel was one of the thousands upon thousands of perfect beings born with no flaw.

Looking back on it now, all Nekane can say about Adriel is that they were a fool and those memories are worthy of nothing but contempt. Their sheer rage and hatred for who they once were has Nekane consider them separate people, that Adriel died in the snow alongside Adomaitis. They refuse to acknowledge who they once were and consider the stigma of being a “monster” to be much more preferable then letting anyone know they were once an angel despite keeping their ruined wings.

Unfortunately despite forcing a separation between “Adriel” and “Nekane”, they cannot separate their memories. The trauma of being tortured still lingers like the scars etched into their body. Nekane possess a fear of the dark, which is at odds with their use of shadow manipulation, and as such do not sleep and frequently neglect other needs. They have an unfortunate habit of self-sabotaging themself when things are going too well and often lose themself in a feedback loop with their own negative thoughts as Nekane can become trapped in heaping their own abuse onto themself. A part of this comes from a fear of the brainwashing that once held them docile - they are unable to tell if the happiness they feel is true or something that still remains from that time. They fear it somehow coming back to claim them so if they’re always miserable then clearly it’s their choice and not something else controlling them.

What ultimately lead to Nekane being captured during their escape and tortured was the betrayal of someone they deeply loved and trusted. Unsurprisingly this has caused them to develop a deep-seated paranoia of other people and a refusal to let the formation of deep bounds happen. They will lie about themself at the drop of a hat so no one can know who they truly are, to the point they would endure physical punishment over telling the truth, and this is the source of their obsession with information. From Nekane’s point of view, if they know everything about someone or something, then nothing can surprise them. And with their photographic memory and own talents of observation they are good at keeping track of others and their daily habits. Unfortunately for Nekane they are still very much vulnerable to mistakes and personal opinions - Sherlock Holmes, they are not - and may miss certain qualities about people that would have saved them some grief in the long run. In addition their paranoia can be taken advantage of and they are prone to fits of anger, especially if someone assumes that since they are an angel they must be happy all the time, and may take it out on somebody unrelated, only to regret it later.

When not dealing with their own paranoia and issues however, Nekane can be a mixed bag but reasonable to deal with. Although they are prone to sarcasm at times, you can be guaranteed to get their honest (and blunt) opinion about something so long as the question isn’t about themself. They have also been known to lower or outright wave the price of their detective services for people who cannot afford much or have suffered like they have in the past. Nekane prefers to keep others at arm’s length but despite their paranoia, they do not hate humanity as a whole but only the cult that was responsible for everything that happened. Spite for that group is the main reason why Nekane kept their wings despite being able to glamour them away like they do for the scars on their face and avoid questions. They know the cult is keeping an eye on them, so they’re rubbing it in their face that despite everything, they’re still alive.

Nekane has a set of standards they attempt to stick to as best as they can, even if their paranoia causes them to overstep them on occasion. They do not kill if they can help it, preferring to distract or disable. The death of Adomaitis did disturb Nekane, as it was something they forced him into, and thus they wish to not put someone in that position again. Sacrifice is a touchy topic for Nekane and they do not consider self-sacrifice to be a noble act, especially if said sacrifice is at the behest of another. That being said Nekane will put themself in harm’s way if they feel it is necessary and will not simply abandon someone in need. They were abandoned once and to do it to someone else would make them no better then their Handler. Finally the information they gather is often kept private and for their own use. While their paranoia has them use said information on others to their advantage and dig into matters best left alone, generally it is not something spread unless Nekane has a reason to do so.

❥ Abilities:

Photographic Memory — Nekane possesses photographic memory where, as long as they can get a good look at something or someone, will be able to remember it with perfect detail. This does not mean they will have perfect understanding of what it is that they remember – Nekane will still need to find someone to translate anything that they do not speak or read, they can remember someone’s appearance but will not know if they are human or not without visual evidence. And because this ability is not on a supernatural scale, they are still prone to error. For example if Nekane was shown a fake art piece and then found the real one later, they will not “suddenly” know the first one was a fake unless there is a noticeable error between the pieces to tip them off.

Shadow Manipulation — Nekane can manipulate shadows within fifteen meters of themself to create things like weapons, use them to grab and pull things as they see fit or use them as extra eyes to look around. This ability puts stress on Nekane's body and thus they can safely use it for about an hour and a half before it starts catching up to them - they can push a little farther then this limit but risk passing out. Blasting the shadows with light will break Nekane's "hold" on them and destroy whatever they have made. Also the farther away the shadows are, the more they have to concentrate to use it - their own shadow is very easy to use but shadows at the edge of their range are much more difficult to work with.

Sensory Illusions — As the name implies, Nekane is capable of casting minor illusions that can play on a person's senses. They could make someone think they saw something move out of the corner of their eye, "hear" the sound of a window breaking and so on. Nekane can only use this ability on one person at a time and they must be able to see the person in question for it to work - even if they know that someone is behind a wall, their illusions won't work unless Nekane can actually see them. And naturally if the person that Nekane attempts to use this ability on does not possess a certain sense then it will not work. If someone is blind then Nekane cannot make them see anything.

Guard Seals — A Guard Seal puts a lock on an object that only Nekane can open and will sound an alarm if someone else breaks the seal. They can only cast Guard Seals over small objects (a lock on a door or a book, for example) and can only have two Guard Seals going at the same time. If they want to cast another Seal with two already active, they will have to deactivate one of the two currently existing Seals.

❥ Extras: While they'll be keeping their ability to manipulate shadows to create eyes or claws, I will be nerfing Nekane's ability to create items/weapons with shadows.

Also, due to the nature of their background/CRAU, I'll be putting up an opt-out post for players to tag into if they don't want certain subjects brought up or to not be tagged by Nekane at all.

Did your character bring anything along (limit 3 items) with them?

+ Their notebook
+ A locket with no picture inside

Which god will they choose to support? Or do you wish to be randomized? Randomized, please!
